A little redness after waxing or epilating is normal and usually fades within a few hours. Good aftercare keeps skin calm and helps prevent the bumps and ingrown hairs that put many people off.
Right after waxing
- Remove any leftover wax with a little baby oil or wax remover — never scrub.
- Press a cool, clean cloth on the area for a few minutes.
- Apply aloe vera gel or a light, unscented lotion.
- Wear loose, cotton clothes over the area.
What to avoid for 24 hours
| Avoid | Why |
|---|---|
| Sun and tanning | Freshly waxed skin burns and darkens more easily |
| Hot showers, saunas | Heat increases redness |
| Gym and heavy sweating | Sweat and friction irritate open pores |
| Perfume, deodorant, scrubs | Can sting and irritate |
| Tight clothes | Rubbing causes bumps |
Preventing ingrown hairs
- From day two, exfoliate gently twice a week.
- Moisturise daily.
- Never pick at bumps or ingrown hairs.
- Wax or epilate regularly — shorter regrowth means less pulling.
Numbing cream?
Some people use a numbing cream before waxing. If you do, choose one made for the purpose, follow the pack exactly and patch-test first. A simpler way to reduce pain is to hold the skin tight and pull fast, close to the skin.
When to see a doctor
- Pus, spreading redness or swelling.
- Burns or blisters from hot wax.
- Bumps that do not settle after a few days.
