The first time you use an epilator decides whether you keep using it. Done right, it is quick, the sting fades fast, and your skin stays smooth for weeks. Here is exactly how to do it.

Before you start

  • Hair length: about 2–5 mm is ideal. Long hair tangles and hurts more — shave a few days before.
  • Exfoliate: gently scrub the area a day or two before (not on the same day).
  • Timing: evenings are best, so any redness settles overnight.
  • Charge: charge the epilator fully.

Step by step

  1. Warm shower, then dry completely. Warm water relaxes the skin; epilate on fully dry skin.
  2. Low speed first. Start on speed 1 — especially on the underarms and for your first session.
  3. Stretch the skin. Use your free hand to hold the skin tight.
  4. Hold it at 90°. Keep the head flat against the skin, without pressing.
  5. Move slowly against the hair growth. Slow, steady strokes catch more hair; going over an area 2–3 times is normal.
  6. Soothe. Apply aloe gel or a light, unscented lotion.

How to make it hurt less

  • Epilate regularly — every 1–2 weeks — so you only remove a few hairs at a time.
  • Keep the skin tight and move slowly.
  • A cool compress afterwards calms redness.
  • It gets much easier after 2–3 sessions as regrowth becomes finer.

Aftercare and ingrown hairs

Redness and small bumps usually settle within a few hours. Avoid sun, hot baths, gym and perfumed products for the rest of the day. To prevent ingrown hairs, exfoliate gently twice a week from day two.

Which epilators make it easier?

Two speeds and a shaver head help a lot. The Kemei KM-519A and Kemei BS-903 both have dual speed, a shaver head and about 40 minutes of cordless use. The Kemei KM-189A is a light, simple first epilator.

When not to epilate

  • On moles, varicose veins, cuts, sunburn, rashes or irritated skin.
  • If you have diabetes, a bleeding disorder or take blood thinners — ask your doctor first.
